United Kingdom Expands Methanol Toxicity Advisory Roster with Eleven Countries

Industrial alcohol alert sign

British government has placed eleven more nations to its travel warning list concerning the threats of industrial alcohol toxicity from adulterated spirits.

The expanded advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "a global increase in the number of reported cases" of toxic alcohol toxicity.

Only recently, officials had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, after a number of high-profile cases including the fatal loss of six travelers in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being advised that even small amounts of industrial alcohol can result in vision loss or death within 12 to 48 hrs.

What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?

Methanol is a toxic substance commonly utilized in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. It is not designed for drinking.

While it is inherently formed during the manufacture of spirits, licensed producers lower it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the distillation process.

Yet in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to save money, and since it is tasteless and scentless, it is very difficult to detect.

Official Guidance for Travellers

Foreign Office official the minister said that all travellers should be aware of the signs of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"When you are drinking spirits in foreign countries, opt for well-known venues and refrain from homemade alcohol or free shots," Falconer said.

"Should anything feels off, like a headache that's way worse than normal or vision problems – contact a doctor fast."

The entire register of nations identified as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
