Djokovic Issues Caution to Jannik Sinner: Doping Ban Will Follow Him Like a "Shadow"

The tennis star has warned Jannik Sinner that his three-month ban for doping will linger over his career as a constant shadow – while also questioning the scheduling of the sanction in the previous season.

Details of the Suspension

Sinner completed a three-month suspension in February 2025 after the World Anti-Doping Agency accepted his explanation that a prohibited performance-enhancing substance, the steroid clostebol, had entered his system accidentally.

"That cloud will follow him just as the cloud of Covid will follow me, for the remainder of our respective careers," the champion remarked in a discussion on a popular YouTube program.

"It's just something that, it was so major, and when that happens, with time it may lessen, but I don't think it will disappear. There's always going to be a certain group of people that will continually reference the incident."

Djokovic's Perspective

Djokovic expressed belief that Sinner, his frequent training companion, "didn't do it on purpose", but he then scrutinized how the player arranged to complete his ban without missing a grand slam.

"There is the lack of transparency, the inconsistency, the convenience [of] the ban occurring between major events, so he doesn't miss out the others – it's just it was very, very odd," he further commented.

Wider Player Reactions

"I am dissatisfied with how the situation was managed and it was evident so many other players, both male and female, who had comparable circumstances coming out in the media and asserting it represented favorable handling."
