‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s journey from gurney to success with Athletic Bilbao

The initial occasion the Athletic striker featured in English soil, an teenage appearing for Athletic Bilbao B against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at the English ground in the 2015 season, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he played in the country, against the English side weeks after, he scored. His third outing, against Pep Guardiola’s team six weeks after that, well, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the city to play against the Red Devils at Leigh Sports Village in 2017, he scored again. An excellent finish, as well. “Actually,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest I’ve netted.” So Athletic did what was necessary: they substituted him.

“I became very upset,” the attacker says, before breaking into laughter. “I’m sure there’s footage. We went to play United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: I hadn’t yet signed agreement, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. No confirmation on the Magpies’ pursuit, but I came across reports about the Red Devils, standard transfer gossip. It’s unclear how true it was, but had they contacted me, I’d have chosen to stay at Bilbao. I’m fortunate to be here.”

Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other

At the facility, Bilbao, the day’s first practice is about to start; after it, the short journey to the airport and a further journey to Britain, now to take on the Magpies in the UCL on the upcoming match. Uttering the name brings a smile to his face. It’s turning out to be a tough year for Athletic, partially owing to the demands of competing at this level. Beaten in added time in the weekend clash, they have secured just a single victory of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and Dortmund in the continental stage. But, look at the overall situation, the big nights he has lived and those that lie ahead, and he feels a calm gratitude from him.

In the the period since he had returned to the club, Gorka has been a Europa League semi-finalist, prevented from reaching a final at home by United, and has ridden an historic vessel along the Nervión river surrounded by a million fans after winning the Copa del Rey, the club’s first trophy in a long wait. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in a long period. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.

He considered it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. Born to the ex-La Real star the former professional and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, the forward is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that produced the coach, the legendary midfielder and Andoni Iraola. He joined Athletic at seventeen but after making his senior debut in August 2018, he experienced a torn cruciate, dropped, a drop in category and a recall before he could truly get a chance, returning at 26 to live the best days of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the UCL.

“You go into the academy not expecting to reach the senior squad but each step you go through you’re persisting and you can notice the proximity. You make it and … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in a handful of matches between his first game and that period. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches at that level and I suffered the ACL injury.

“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it shifted the perspective. Recovering from a long-term injury is challenging, but it helps. You adopt practices new to you. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then go home, as a youngster does. At Lezama, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. Should your hips be uneven, address that. With decent ankle function, enhance it further. Every small aspect: execute them.

“At the top level you’re going to collide with opponents who have crashed into players repeatedly. They’re so strong. Reviewing old images: my legs are chicken legs. So what happens, happens. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Training finishes, but additional work remains. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”

You also have to play. The striker moved upset in that year, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in that season, he netted three goals in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the following period, the he found his form. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, work, believe, and should the time come a vacancy arises for your role, a return could happen. Readiness is vital. When they decided to call again, an aspiration fulfilled. The trophy success, European football, and make the UCL … pfff.”

No wonder he says appreciate the experience. Especially after the previous season which, at times, was focused on persistence. From top scorer with a high tally, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
